[8]May 2026 [9]Tim Hårek Andreassen [10]tim@harek.no [11]PGP key May 2026 Published June 4, 2026 4 minutes read We’re half way through the year, time flies, and I have procrastinated writing this blogpost. 🍀 Life I’m adjusting to having two kids 😅 It’s not the kids themselves making me tired, it’s everything the role demands of us as parents. Our oldest still wants to be the center of attention, which is understandable. But don’t get me wrong, it’s great having two kids! There’s so much to look forward to each day. The newborn is changing and growing for each day, and our oldest keeps showing us that she loves being the older sister, she wants to help out and be together as a family. May has been a weird month for me, I haven’t wanted to do much. I have procrastinated almost everything I usually do: working, exercising, walking the dog, work around the house, reading, writing, and so on. As I’m writing this it feels like I’m out of the worst of it, because my energy has been much better the last few days. 🧑‍💻 Development I rediscovered [12]mise and actually read what it does. I’m 100% sold on its idea. mise pins tool versions, manages environments, and gives me a task runner per project, it has replaced the Makefile across my projects and made maintaining the same environment across machines much easier. No more memorizing CLI commands like Hugo’s! I’ve also adopted [13]fnox (by the same developer) for secrets. It keeps the values age-encrypted, so they can live committed in the repo. At work I introduced mise alongside fnox as the “front-end” for the secrets we store in 1Password on our two biggest projects. I’m noticing I have a deep appreciation for developer tooling. 🎬 Entertainment From my [14]logs. Movies • Normal (2026) – Cool movie. Nothing more, nothing less. • The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026) – Why did they make this? It was Frank (Jon) going around making grunts and looking almost like crying the entire “TV movie”. I like Jon, but WTF was this. • Predator: Badlands (2025) – Rewatched with my SO. Still good! Hoping for a great future of the Predator (and Alien) franchise! • Obsession (2026) – Phenomenal acting, music, and characters! I don’t want to spoil anything. Everyone needs to see this movie. It’s not perfect, but very close. The ending felt somewhat rushed. TV • Daredevil: Born Again (S2) – Throughout this season I was really hoping for more crossover characters. There were some, but I’m still missing some. Overall the season was fun. It’s hard not to think of the mayor stuff to be social commentary of what’s currently going on in the US. • BEEF (S2) – Same shit, different beef. Blackmail and lies will always come back and bite you in the ass. • The Boys (S5) – The source material’s ending has a lot more umph, but I understand why they chose a different approach. I liked this season, and the send-off was nice. • Half Man (S1) – Great show! It was a real rollercoaster of shit happening. At first I thought it was going to be a really bad show, but Gadd (creator) surprised me with Baby Reindeer, so I gave it a chance. Also just started watching Vox Machina S4, I’ve missed Grog! Games • Subnautica 2 (initial early access) (2026) – I missed the terrors of the depth! It’s pretty similar to the original, but it got some new tricks. Looking forward to the next releases and more story! I’m currently playing 007 First Light on PC (Linux FTW), it’s really cool! Also, they just announced a new God of War, God of War Laufey, it looks awesome! Books I’m currently listening to Platform Decay and The Martian. 🌐 Links • [15]Ascetic Computing – Fantastic blogpost! I had never heard of the term “Ascetic” before, and this really resonates with me. • [16]The social contract of writing – Do the work. • [17]No one actually wants simplicity – Complexity bad. • [18]Can we have the day off? – Yes, please! • [19]Don’t ask to ask, just ask – No hello… • [20]Going back to inconvenience – We need to do stuff ourselves! • [21]Why I Don’t Vibe Code – An excellent take! I want to think myself, and not the computer. LLMs still have their use, but I agree that we use it too much, we need to exercise our muscles ourselves. • [22]Geography is four-dimensional – This makes perfect sense! • [23]I spent my whole career building passive income – > Write when you don’t feel like it. Work out when it’s easier to skip. Do your taxes instead of postponing again. Go outside when you’d rather stay in. • [24]Protect Your Shed – I agree with the author. Doing stuff in your “shed” will make you a better developer and coworker overall, you get more reps in, and you get to apply what you’ve learned both at work and at home. • [25]“People who don’t use AI will be left behind” – Let’s leave behind the people who keep saying this!
