It was a hot day and it was great to peruse the booths and the energy of the folks walking the USD campus was terrific. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Aside: I got to tell Kelly (again) that my parents, when they were first dating, used to go to Mass at the [10]Immaculata. It never made sense to me that they went to church, since for most of my life Mass was not something my Dad was interested in attending. It is a pretty church. Back in the 1960s you could drive through and park right in front. [IMG_5947-scaled] ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ But really the reason for this post is because of the nice surprise I got hearing Chuck Tingle speak (in his pink mask reading “LOVE IS REAL”). [11]Beth Accomando interviewed him. He was disarming, charming, funny, and thoughtful. I don’t know that it was recorded, but I wanted to write down my own notes from the chat as best I could, because it feels salient and inspirational. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Chuck Tingle on genres which are thought of as non-intelligent: “romance, erotica, horror, comedy are all genres of the body, not the mind; romance is meant to elicit arousal, horror a scream, comedy a laugh” On the key to writing erotica: “Think of a problem, solve it by having sex” A “Tingler” is a book Chuck writes in 24-hours, publishing it immediately thereafter. An example Tingler might be “Pounded by the Pound.”, a satire about Brexit. Here’s [12]Vox’s take. Chuck mentioned a Tumblr account which has reviewed all 400 or so “Tinglers.” I didn’t find that (yet) but I did see that Chuck appears to have a proper Tumblr account: [13]drchucktingle.tumblr.com. Here’s [14]his post from yesterday. Chuck related the story of writing his first book, asking on Twitter whether any major publisher wanted to publish it, and getting an email 20 minutes later from [15]Macmillan. He said that while it’s a great story, it’s not a story that can work for others, unless prior to posting on social media you amassed a huge online following and wrote 300 books. On getting contacted by a “real” publisher/movie production company/ record company: We’re all told that the ultimate goal of a creative person is to get that book deal, or to sell that movie script, or get that record deal is a lottery ticket and we ought to do ANYTHING to take that deal. That’s not the situation at all. Chuck’s advice to creatives is to view a meeting with a company like that as: …like a meeting between Godzilla and King Kong, not like a meeting between Godzilla and a guy in a taxicab about to be stomped. It ought to be a meeting of EQUALS. Chuck related the story of how he started going to San Diego Comic Con. Troma started inviting him just to come along and just hang out. He attended as a lark, and as time has passed each year he’s done more: signings, panels, etc. He related the story of someone telling him “amazing Chuck Tingle cosplay!” to which he replied “I am Chuck Tingle!” and the person didn’t really believe it, but later posted online. The final question of the interview was about the internet. As a person who has used the internet to invent a career, Chuck spoke well on it: The promise of the internet was that it was beautiful. “Charlie bit my finger” is such a fascinating thing. (The internet) was great but then the hand of capitalism evolved it against what it started as–human fostering human connection–and capitalism works to crushes connection. But the inertia of the universe is love, and sincerity is good. I think we can cycle back to that beautiful fostering of human connection. Two surfers argued in the surf. Dumb. But like toddlers they wore themselves out eventually.
